Our Oak + Dimensions

At Cottage Beams, we prioritise sustainability by sourcing oak from responsibly managed forests certified by PEFC.
We are proud to collaborate with two tree planting partnerships, one being the Goosemoor Nature Reserve and the other is called One Tree Planted.

Oak Characteristics

The oak we use, which is either naturally air-dried or kiln dried, possess certain inherent traits. These are the result of the oak's reaction to environmental shifts and forces over time. These traits lend a distinct appearance to the oak and infuse a sense of "character" to every item we manufacture. As a result, each beam or shelf possesses its own unique set of traits and there will be variation between individual pieces. The following are the traits that are naturally found in our products:

Cracks (Checks)
Checks, or cracks that form in the wood, are typically the result of tension stress. These are less common in our kiln dried products and smaller cracks may have been filled.

Knots
Knots, often distinguished by a darker centre and a resin outline, stand out from the grain. They add unique character to the wood and lend authenticity to the timber boards as no two knots are identical.

Medullary Rays
These markings, known as "medullary rays", are a natural feature that enhances the rich character and beauty of all our oak products.

HANDCRAFTED AND UNIQUE

It's crucial to understand that since each of our products is handcrafted, there will be variations between each piece. Each beam or shelf will have its own unique grain pattern, cracks, knots, and splits that add to its natural traits. Please expect some further movement if placed above a heat source.

ITEM DIMENSIONS

Beam sizes might vary slightly due to the machining and sanding process. Please allow for a 10mm variance. These minor differences are not considered defects.

Weight Guidelines

We recommend that each concealed rod fixing for solid walls can hold approximately 15kg; however this will depend on the depth of the shelf purchase and the integrity of the wall which it is installed on. We may use 12mm round bar for any beam over 14cm in depth and 200cm in length

Plasterboard fixings can be installed onto standard12mm to 16mm plasterboard

PRODUCT COLOURS AND FINISHES

We offer a variety of colours however our most common colours are Natural, Warm, White and Dark. Please note colours may have slight differences from one piece to another. Although we try our best to match all colours and finishes, these variations are normal and not considered manufacturing defects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size beam should I choose for my fireplace?

Choosing the right size depends on both the width of your fireplace and the overall look you
want to achieve within your room. As a general guide:
● Small fireplaces: 80–110cm lengths with slimmer depths
● Standard fireplaces: 110–140cm lengths with 9cm or 14cm depths
● Large fireplaces/open chimney breasts: 150cm+ lengths with 9cm or 14cm depths
For the best visual balance, we usually recommend the beam slightly overhangs the fireplace
opening to create a stronger focal point within the room.
If you are unsure, our team is always happy to help recommend the best size for your space. A
useful tip is to create a simple cardboard cut-out of your chosen size and hold it in position to
help visualise how the beam will look once installed.

How do I know this will fit my wall?

Every beam is supplied with the appropriate concealed fixing system for your chosen wall type,
designed to create a clean floating appearance with no visible brackets.
● Solid walls: concealed heavy-duty floating fixings
● Plasterboard walls: specialist cavity wall fixings
If you have a lath and plaster wall or dot-and-dab wall, please contact us before ordering. In
some cases, solid wall fixings can still be used if the cavity gap is minimal or suitable fixing
points can be located behind the wall.
Simply select your wall type before ordering or contact us with a photo of your fireplace area
and we will happily recommend the most suitable fixing option for your home

Will the oak crack or move over time?

Yes — this is a natural characteristic of genuine solid oak and part of what gives each beam its
authentic appearance and individual character.
Because our beams are handcrafted from real solid oak, small cracks, splits, knots, grain
variation, and natural movement can occur as the timber adjusts to its environment. These
features are especially common in air-dried oak and are not considered defects.
We use air-dried oak that has typically been drying naturally for at least 2 years to help minimise
excessive movement. However, as with all natural timber, some further movement may still
occur as the beam acclimatises to its new home.
For best results, we recommend leaving the beam in the room where it will be installed for
approximately 2 weeks before fitting. This allows the timber to stabilise naturally within its
environment before installation.
No two beams are ever identical, which is part of the beauty of real timber designed to age
beautifully over time.

Are fixings included and is it easy to install?

Yes — all required fixings are included based on the wall type selected when ordering.
Our beams are designed for straightforward installation using standard DIY tools while
achieving a premium floating appearance with no visible brackets.
Most customers are able to install their beam themselves, although professional installation is
always recommended if you are unsure.
Typical installation time is approximately 20–40 minutes
