Installation Info
Installing Your Oak Fireplace Beam
Our fireplace beams are supplied with a concealed fixing system, giving a clean, bracket-free finish once installed. Each beam arrives with steel supports pre-machined into the back face — these slot directly into the wall fixings for a secure, professional result.
What's Included
Every beam comes with concealed steel supports included in the price. We supply the correct fixings for both solid masonry walls (brick, block, and stone) and plasterboard walls — so whatever your wall type, you're covered straight out of the box. Detailed fitting instructions are included with every order.
Marking Your Wall
We recommend waiting until your beam has arrived before marking the wall. Hold it in position at your chosen height and mark directly through the fixing points on the back — this gives you the exact hole centres for your specific beam. If you need to plan ahead, fixing positions are 200mm in from each end; your centre-to-centre distance is your beam length minus 400mm.
Fixing into Solid Masonry (brick, block, stone)
Drill into the masonry at your marked positions, insert the wall plugs provided, and fix the steel supports to the wall. Slide the beam onto the supports — the pre-machined holes are designed to align precisely. The beam should sit flush and stable with no visible fixings.
Fixing into Plasterboard
We supply the appropriate fixings for plasterboard walls, so no additional parts are needed. For the best result, we recommend using a stud finder (under £15 from any DIY store) to locate the timber studs behind the board — fixing into studs gives a significantly stronger hold. Where fixing into studs isn't possible, use the supplied plasterboard fixings, which are rated for this application. If your stud centres don't align with the standard fixing positions, please contact us before ordering and we can adjust the hole positions on your beam to suit.
Fixing Position — Top or Bottom Face
By default, fixings are located on the largest (front-facing) surface of the beam. If you need fixings on the shorter side instead — for example, to fix up from a mantel shelf below — please add a note in the customer notes section when ordering and we'll machine accordingly.
A Note on Wall Integrity
The above assumes the wall is in sound condition. Crumbling mortar, hollow masonry sections, or weak dot-and-dab plasterboard will reduce holding strength significantly. If you're unsure about your wall type or condition, we'd recommend using a qualified tradesperson — a carpenter or experienced handyman can assess the wall and ensure your beam is installed safely and securely.

Our Oak Beams
Air-Dried and Responsibly Sourced
All of our oak is air-dried naturally, allowing the timber to season at its own pace. This is the traditional method for substantial pieces like fireplace beams and produces timber with genuine, honest character. As a natural result of air-drying, the timber may display shakes (fine cracks along the grain) and surface splits — these are not defects, they are inherent characteristics of solid air-dried oak and part of what gives each beam its authenticity. Once installed, the timber will continue to slowly acclimatise to its environment, and minor further movement is entirely normal for natural wood of this scale. The timber is sourced from sustainably managed forests certified by the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), ensuring it is harvested in a way that protects woodland ecosystems and ensures forests are replenished for future generations.
What to Expect from Natural Oak
Oak is a natural material, and no two pieces are identical. The character of your beam will be shaped by the individual tree it came from — and that's what makes it special.
Colour and tone: Oak ranges from pale gold to warm honey, with occasional deeper tones depending on the part of the tree and how it's been finished. Over time, oak mellows and deepens in colour, developing a richer patina with age and light exposure.
Grain and figuring: Oak has a pronounced open grain with a natural variation in pattern. You may notice subtle silver-grey ray markings running across the grain — this is a characteristic unique to oak and a sign of quality, not a defect.
Knots and natural features: Small, tight knots are a natural part of solid timber and contribute to each beam's individual character. Larger or open knots are assessed during production and only retained where they don't affect the structural integrity of the piece.
We lightly finish our beams to enhance the natural grain and provide protection, while keeping the honest, tactile feel of real wood. Touch-up wax is available separately if you ever need to refresh the surface.
