Installation Info

Installing Your Ash Floating Shelf

Our ash floating shelves use a concealed fixing system, leaving a clean, bracket-free finish once installed. The load capacity and the right fixing choice both depend on your wall type and shelf size — here's how to get it right.

Marking Your Wall

We recommend waiting until your shelf has arrived before marking the wall. Place it against the wall at your chosen height and mark directly through the fixing positions — this gives you the exact centres for your specific shelf size. Fixings are positioned 100mm from each end, so if you need to plan ahead, your centre-to-centre distance is your shelf length minus 200mm.

How Many Fixings?

Shelves up to 140cm long, up to 20cm deep, and up to 4.2cm thick are supplied with 2 fixings. Shelves in the same depth and thickness range up to 2.5m long are supplied with 3 fixings.

Solid Masonry Walls (brick, block, stone)

Standard shelves come supplied with concealed steel rods ready to set into masonry. Each fixing point is rated to 12kg — giving a total capacity of 24kg on a 2-fixing installation and 36kg on a 3-fixing installation. These figures include the weight of the shelf itself, so the usable load capacity for items placed on the shelf will be slightly less. Please note that longer and deeper shelves may not reach these maximums; distribute weight evenly and avoid concentrating loads at one end.

Deeper and Thicker Shelves — 12mm Bar

Shelves over 25cm deep, and shelves 7cm thick that are over 20cm deep and over 100cm long, are supplied with 12mm steel bar rather than standard rods. These require anchor resin to set into the wall — resin is not supplied and should be sourced before installation. We recommend confirming the correct resin type with your installer or local builder's merchant before drilling.

25cm deep shelves are supplied with longer rods as standard — no additional parts are needed.

Plasterboard Walls — Finding the Studs

If you have plasterboard walls, the best outcome is locating the timber studs behind the board. Use a stud finder (widely available for under £15) to identify stud positions before marking your fixing points. Where your shelf fixings can be set into studs, use the solid wall concealed rod fixings — you'll achieve the same load capacity as a masonry installation.

Where fixing into studs isn't possible, use our plasterboard concealed shelf supports with the included wall anchors. Each fixing point is rated to 7.5kg, giving a total shelf load of up to 15kg — ideal for lighter display items such as candles, small plants, and ornaments.

If you need your fixing positions adjusted to align with your stud centres, please get in touch before ordering and we'll be happy to accommodate this on your shelf.

A Note on Wall Integrity

The figures above assume the wall is in good condition. Old or damaged masonry, crumbling mortar, or fixings placed into hollow sections of a wall will reduce load capacity significantly. If you're in any doubt about your wall condition or type, we'd recommend having your shelf installed by a qualified tradesperson — a carpenter or handyman can assess the wall, locate studs, and ensure your fixings are placed correctly for a safe, lasting result.

Alcove Shelves

Our alcove range is designed to sit between two walls, so only the front face will be profiled in your chosen style. As most walls aren't perfectly square, we recommend one of two approaches:

Shadow gap: Order or cut your shelf 5mm short of the alcove width and leave a small shadow gap at each side. Clean, intentional, and no fussing on site.

Scribing: Order the shelf slightly longer than the alcove width, then scribe it on site for a snug fit. Use an angle finder to pick up the exact angle of each wall, transfer those angles to the shelf, and trim accordingly.

Our Ash

Kiln-Dried and Responsibly Sourced

All of our ash is kiln-dried to minimise moisture content, making it as dimensionally stable as possible before it reaches you. This reduces the risk of warping, twisting, or movement once installed — so your shelf stays true in a typical domestic environment. The timber is sourced from sustainably managed forests certified by the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), ensuring it is harvested in a way that protects woodland ecosystems and ensures forests are replenished for future generations.

What to Expect from Natural Ash

Ash is a natural material, and no two pieces are identical. The character of your shelf will be shaped by the individual tree it came from — and that's what makes it special.

Colour and tone: Ash ranges from creamy white to pale golden brown, often with subtle grey or olive undertones depending on the part of the tree. It has a bright, clean appearance that sits beautifully in contemporary and Scandi-inspired interiors. Over time, ash mellows gently with light exposure, developing a warm, honeyed tone.

Grain and figuring: Ash has a bold, open grain with a strong, flowing pattern — more pronounced than many other hardwoods. The grain lines are clean and dramatic, giving each shelf a striking, architectural quality. Occasional wavy or interlocked grain can produce attractive figuring that catches the light.

Knots and natural features: Small, tight knots are a natural part of solid timber and contribute to each shelf's individual character. Larger or open knots are assessed during production and only retained where they don't affect structural integrity. Small checks — fine surface splits that can occur as timber dries — may be lightly filled and sanded as part of our finishing process, giving a smooth, even surface while preserving the character of the grain.

Ash is a tough, resilient hardwood — strong, slightly flexible, and highly durable in a domestic setting. We lightly finish our shelves to enhance the natural grain and provide surface protection, while keeping the honest, tactile feel of real wood. Touch-up wax is available separately if you ever need to refresh the surface.

Here to answer your

Frequently Asked Questions

Which shelf depth should I choose?

The right shelf depth depends on both the look you want to achieve and how the shelf will be
used within your home.
● 14cm depth: ideal for photos, décor, and smaller spaces
● 19cm depth: our most popular all-round option
● 25cm depth: best for larger styling pieces, kitchens, and statement shelving
If you are unsure, we usually recommend 19cm as the safest and most versatile choice for most
homes.

Can these shelves be installed on plasterboard walls?

Yes — we offer concealed fixing options suitable for both plasterboard and solid walls.
For lighter shelves and decorative use, concealed plasterboard fixings work very well. For
deeper or heavier shelves, we may recommend specialist fixings or installation into timber studs
where possible.
If you are unsure, simply contact us with your wall type and shelf size and we will happily
recommend the best fixing option for your space.

Are your floating shelves made from real solid oak?

Yes — all of our floating shelves are handcrafted from genuine solid kiln-dried wood, with no
veneers, hollow cores, or laminate finishes.
Each shelf is individually made to showcase the natural grain, texture, and character of real oak,
giving every piece a unique appearance and authentic feel.
Kiln-dried wood offers greater stability for indoor use while still retaining the warmth, texture,
and natural beauty that make solid timber so unique.

Will the shelf have knots, grain, or natural cracks?

Yes — solid oak naturally contains unique grain patterns, knots, texture, and occasional splits or
checks.
These are not defects but part of the authentic character and individuality of real timber. Every
shelf is unique and will vary naturally in appearance, helping create a more natural and
authentic finish within your home

What if the shelf doesn’t suit my space?

We understand that choosing the right shelf online can feel difficult, which is why we offer our
Perfect Fit Guarantee for added peace of mind.
If your shelf does not look quite right once received, simply return it to us and we will exchange
it for another size or style.
If the replacement product selected is higher in value, the additional balance will simply need to
